CBB: Tennessee secures the SEC title
The Tennessee basketball Volunteers are your 2024 SEC regular season champions. The Vols were staring down a murder’s row schedule to end the SEC slate, and all they did was beat Auburn, Alabama, and South Carolina to wrap up the title before the season finale against Kentucky even tips off. The title-clinching win on Wednesday night against South Carolina was an extremely physical dogfight where South Carolina drug the Vols into the mud. However, the Vols cemented the fact that they can win any type of matchup as they left Columbia with a 66-59 win.
This marks the first outright SEC title for the Vols since 2008, and the 2nd SEC title under head coach Rick Barnes. The Vols were able to win the conference in a season where the SEC just might be the best it’s ever been, and at the end of the day, the best team emerged with the title. This title is also another feather in the cap for the Vols in favor of securing a 1-seed.
I understand that college basketball is a tournament sport, but winning this league is an accomplishment that should never be forgotten. Winning the marathon of the SEC regular season schedule is far more impressive to me than getting hot for 3 days in the SEC tournament. Do not let anyone from any other fanbase tell you that this title is meaningless. They are just coping with the fact that the Vols secured a ring.
Here’s to Rick Barnes and the Vols hanging another banner, but with the way this team is performing right now a Final 4 banner might soon be up there to match it.
