Titans-Browns: Reacting to a miserable performance by Tennessee

The Titans were utterly destroyed in every facet of the game against the Cleveland Browns in Week 3. It was reasonable to think this would be a bad matchup for the Titans, but nobody could’ve foreseen how much of a shit-show we were in for.

First of all, the Titans’ offense is a complete joke. I never thought I would see an offense that would make me wax nostalgic about the Terry Robiskie-led offense. This offense isn’t just bad, it’s completely inept. Running toss plays to Derrick Henry that lose yards, dumping it off to Spears in the flat for a loss, receivers dropping passes, it was a complete joke. Every emotion that you feel when gazing upon a pile of dog excrement is an emotion you also feel while watching this offense.

I might surprise some people here, but I don’t blame these problems on Tim Kelly, at least not all of them. The play-calling actually has been more creative than Todd Downing’s braindead gameplans from last year. The problem this year has been more on execution than the play-calling itself. Chig Okonkwo dropped another pass that would’ve been a huge gain. Treylon Burks dropped another pass that also would’ve been a huge gain. The offensive line would have a very tough time blocking 5 middle schoolers.

The receivers, as a whole, are much better than last year. Chris Moore and DeAndre Hopkins both made catches that nobody on the 2022 squad could have made. However, the tight end room has gotten so much worse. All Trevon Wesco does is commit penalties, Josh Whyle can’t even get on the field, and Okonkwo has butterfingers all of a sudden.

Every season, we think the Titans’ offensive line couldn’t possibly be worse. Instead, it somehow DOES get worse, every single year. Andre Dillard may very well be worse than Dennis Daley. Daley received the ire of Titans’ fans all last year, and rightfully so. However, Dillard has allowed the most sacks of any tackle through 2 weeks, and he makes significantly more money than Daley. The Titans paid MORE money to get WORSE production.

Moving to the defense. This unit is usually a strength, but it was god-awful on Sunday. Browns’ receivers were wide open all afternoon and every member of the Titans’ secondary (save for Kevin Byard) looked like they’d never been on a football field before. Kristian Fulton is not a good corner. Fulton has a putrid 39.8 PFF grade through 3 games. It’s actually impressive how pathetic that is. Amani Hooker has been horrible, Sean Murphy-Bunting has been horrible, and it’s officially time to start Roger McCreary.

The lack of communication yesterday was startling. It’s one thing to just get beat, but to look like you have zero clue what the assignment is? Absolutely inexcusable.

I don’t think Vrabel or Kelly or any other coach should be on the hot seat yet. This roster isn’t very good, and that’s obvious. I’m not panicking, just disappointed.
