Tennessee Volunteers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide: The Third Saturday in October

In the heart of college football, two big-time SEC teams are set to face off this weekend, promising fans a thrilling matchup that's been marked on calendars for the past year. The Tennessee Volunteers are gearing up to face off against the Alabama Crimson Tide in what is sure to be a defining moment in the 2023 season. The anticipation is palpable, the stakes are high, and a lot of college football fans can't wait to witness this classic showdown. Both of these teams come into this game 5-1. This makes this game a must-win for both teams in regards to playoff and SEC championship contention.

A Tale of Tradition

The rivalry between the Tennessee Volunteers and the Alabama Crimson Tide is deeply rooted in the history of college football. Dating back to 1901, these two teams have faced each other over a hundred times, making it one of the most storied rivalries in the sport. While Alabama holds a significant advantage in the all-time series with a lopsided head-to-head record, the Volunteers have often been the thorn in the side of the Crimson Tide, occasionally pulling off unexpected upsets. Such history is what adds a layer of intrigue to every meeting between these teams. After the crazy game last year in Knoxville, I know the Tide fans are ready for some get-back. So, who is going to be the team smoking the cigars at the end of this one?

Tennessee Volunteers:

The Volunteers, led by head coach Josh Heupel, have shown signs of resurgence in recent years. With a renewed focus on its football program, Tennessee is steadily reclaiming its spot among the SEC elite. The Volunteers boast a talented roster with a dynamic rushing offense and an improved defense. Quarterback Joe Milton III is expected to lead the charge, while a formidable group of running backs will provide the offensive firepower. Jaylen Wright is going into this week's game 4th in the SEC in regards to yards (571), and he is averaging a whopping 7.1 yards per carry. All three of the running backs on this team are elite. Jabari Small is averaging 5.5 yards per carry. Dylan Sampson is one of the most slept-on athletes on this team. Sampson has that electric factor when it comes to him; he averages 6.1 YPC and, in my opinion, should be getting a few more snaps with the offense. Joe Milton is to me, the biggest question mark when it comes to the offensive side of the ball. Joe can be a very good quarterback but his decision-making is a worry for most people when it comes to him. Joe and the receivers need to show up this game if the Vols have any chance of winning this game. The Volunteers are hungry to make a statement and solidify their position as a contender in the SEC East. This game is a must-win for them if they have any aspirations of winning the East and getting to the playoffs.

Alabama Crimson Tide:

The Alabama Crimson Tide, under the legendary guidance of head coach Nick Saban, continues to set the standard for excellence in college football. With a very strong program, Alabama is a national title contender almost every single year. The Crimson Tide consistently produce top-tier talent and are currently led by quarterback Jalen Milroe, making them run a different style of offense than what they are used to. Alabama is missing those elite wide receivers they are used to having. Don't get me wrong, they have talent there this year, but it's not the same as Julio Jones, Devonte Smith, or Amari Cooper. Jase McClellan is a very talented back for Alabama, and he definitely could cause some problems for the defense. Alabama's defense is no slouch either; they will ensure that they are a balanced and formidable opponent for any team. They are, for sure going to be a challenge for the Volunteers in this one.

Key Matchup Factors

1. Quarterback Duel: The quarterback matchup between Joe Milton III of Tennessee and Alabama's signal-caller Jalen Milroe will be a focal point. I believe these two match up well overall. Milroe's development and composure under pressure will be tested against Tennessee's defense, which leads the SEC in sacks, while Joe Milton will face the Tide’s very good defensive front as well. Milton has struggled in the decision-making department, and playing in Tuscaloosa won't make it any easier. Alabama, in my opinion, has the advantage at the quarterback position.

2. Defensive Prowess: Both teams have been struggling on the offensive side of the ball. Making this game likely to be a lower-scoring affair. The effectiveness of each team's defensive line and the ability of their skilled players to make big plays will be crucial. Tennessee's James Pearce and Tyler Baron will have to disrupt Jalen Milroe and keep him from throwing the ball long. The Tide’s offensive line has struggled this year and will have a tough task against the Vols front seven. Meanwhile, the secondary for both teams have been performing well for the most part this year. This is why I expect this game to include a whole lot of running. This game is going to come down to who wins the trenches on both sides of the ball.

3. Offensive Showdown: Offense wins games, obviously, and the team that can make key plays and not turnover the ball will have a significant advantage. Alabama's offense has struggled when you think about the recent years of Alabama. Jalen Milroe is an extremely athletic quarterback who can get out of trouble with his legs. Which could end up being a problem for the Tennessee defense. On the other side, Joe Milton should use his legs more. Seeing him run over the Texas A&M linebacker last week shows me that if the pass isn't there, RUN. Tennessee has looked a whole lot better with the offensive line since the return of elite center Cooper Mays. This leads me to believe that Tennessee has the advantage of both defensive and offensive lines in this one.

4. Home Advantage: The game's location can't be understated, as Alabama's Bryant-Denny Stadium is known for its raucous atmosphere. The Volunteers will need to stay focused amidst the thousands of Crimson Tide supporters. Tennessee has also struggled on the road and has been bad when it comes to penalties in every game this year. It's something that needs to be fixed. You can't give Alabama free yards in a game this big and crucial to your season.

Conclusion

When the Tennessee Volunteers and the Alabama Crimson Tide take the field this week, college football fans are in for a treat. This storied rivalry is more than just a game; it's a meeting of tradition, pride, and the pursuit of greatness. The outcome will undoubtedly have a significant impact on both teams' seasons and the SEC landscape as a whole. Whether you bleed orange or crimson, this matchup is a must-watch, and the memories created on the gridiron will be talked about for years to come. If I had to put a prediction on the board, I would tell you I truly believe Tennessee comes out with a big win here. Close game though, with a final score prediction of 31-24 Tennessee.
