Post Game Reaction — Chargers Defeat the Titans

The Titans proved once again they hardly belong in the NFL. The Titans lost to the Chargers 27-17 and it wasn’t even as close as the 10 point spread indicates — thanks to a garbage time TD from Will Levis to Calvin Ridley. The Titans were completely outmatched in every facet of the game. Offense could barely score and move the ball (no turnovers though), the defense couldn’t stop the run, and in contrast the pass defense was actually pretty good.

The Chargers accumulated 145 yards on the ground and only 164 through the air. However, the defense showed zero heart or ability to stop the Chargers offense all game. In contrast, the Titans could barely scrounge up yards on offense. The Titans continue to get themselves into long down and distance from the O-line. Leroy Watson was called for 2 false starts in a row in the 3rd quarter and then on the same drive Brian Callahan called a brilliant 2nd and 20+ screen play to make it 3rd and even longer. This Titans offense is an abomination.

If you looked just at the stat sheet you’d think Will Levis had a pretty good game. Good news is he didn’t turn it over — thanks to J.C. Latham. However, he consistently held the ball much too long and took unnecessary sacks. Levis was sacked 7 times and I’d venture to say that all 7 could have been avoided be either A.) feeling the pressure or B.) just throwing it away. Will Levis has ZERO pocket awareness and no feel whatsoever when the rush is nearing him. File that as another reason that Will Levis is not the future QB of the Tennessee Titans.

Brian Callahan didn’t do Levis any favors. He continuously doesn’t understand down and distance and too often call plays that have no business being called given the situation. As previously mentioned the screen to Tyjae that went -5 and plenty of other calls throughout the day that just didn’t help Levis when needed. Even Jonathan Vilma (the color commentator) mentioned on air how Callahan needs to get the ball to Ridley in crucial situations. Instead, Callahan does what he does and the Titans off has been suffering because of it. Not only that but the Titans special teams once again failed the team as they allowed another big return that went to their own 45 or so yard line.

This team has so many problems it’s really hard to know where to start. However, one thing for sure is if the Titans opponent has a former Titan on the team they’re bound to make plays. Take Bud Dupree for example — the nearly 32 year old pass rusher who was let go a few years ago by the Titans looked unstoppable today thanks to Latham. Is it any wonder now that Joe Alt was the better choice and why he went two picks earlier to Los Angeles? Now, that’s not to say that Latham isn’t or won’t be a good LT. It only means that for now and the immediate future Joe Alt is currently better.

The good news is that the Titans are now 3rd overall in draft position. Due to already having their bye week they realistically should be 2nd ahead of the Giants. The Titans are ludicrously bad. However, don’t understimate the Titans ability to mess up a good thing if you’re on team Tankathon. The Titans easiest games will probably be the Minnesota Vikings (Sam Darnold’s seeing ghosts again), and Jacksonville twice. The Jaguars had an opportunity to win the game late but thanks to Mac Jones he threw straight to the Vikings defensive back and that was game over. We’ll have to see how the Titans do but there’s still a very real possibility that they end up with the top pick in the draft.

What’s Next

The Titans take on the Minnesota Vikings and will be tasked with stopping the best WR in the NFL in Justin Jefferson. Unfortunately for Justin Jefferson his QB Sam Darnold has regressed to his usual self and is struggling to play decent football. If Sam Darnold wasn’t the Vikings QB this game could get out of reach fast. However, you want to look at it the Titans certainly have a chance to pull off the upset next week in Nashville.
