What Does Adding Tyler Boyd Mean For the 2024 Tennessee Titans?

The Titans finally did it. They went from having one of the worst WR corps in the NFL to having one of the best in a singular offseason. The Titans addition of Tyler Boyd is a big one. The news was first reported on X by Jeremy Fowler. Boyd will now join DeAndre Hopkins and Calvin Ridley — both of whom are coming off of 1,000+ yard seasons. It should come as no surprise that the courtship between the Titans and Boyd starting last week was both mutual and fruitful. The Titans have desperately needed someone other than Treylon Burks or Kyle Philips as the primary slot option.

In 2023 both Burks and Philips combined for a measly 31 receptions, 402 yards, and 0 touchdowns. Those type of numbers just don’t cut it in the National Football League. Treylon Burks and/or Kyle Philips may be competing to see who’s going to make the final 53 come August. Which is a far departure from where many thought they’d both be when drafted in 2022. With the lackluster 2023 performances from both Burks and Philips it’s no surprise Brian Callahan mentioned adding a slot wide receiver nearly a month ago. The Titans not only have solid depth at the WR position, but now boast an amalgam of weapons surrounding Will Levis.

Tyler Boyd is no stranger to Head Coach Brian Callahan. Coach Callahan had been the OC for the Bengals the past 5 years. In that time – since 2019 – Boyd has done most of his best work. In that time period Boyd has gained 4,154 yards on 361 receptions and 21 touchdowns while mostly being the #3 wide receiver. Those are solid numbers in that 5 year span. Since 2020 and 2021 the Bengals drafted both Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase respectively. In that time Boyd has seen his role decrease year-over year. However, he’s still a competent WR who can come in and produce. According to PFF Boyd does his best from 0-9 yards and 10-19 yards from the line of scrimmage – He put up a spectacular 91.9 rating from 0-9 yards, and a stellar 96.5 rating from 10-19 yards. Those are elite ratings at the position from that depth. Expect Brian Callahan to utilize Boyd in the same fashion as he was used in Cincinnati. Boyd will be responsible for controlling the middle of the field while Ridley and Hopkins can do most of their damage on the outside while lined up in 3 by 1 or 2 by 1 formations. This is huge for a young QB. Will Levis will get the benefit of having Boyd eat up the middle of the field as defenses are preoccupied with Hopkins and Ridley on the perimeter. The MOF is often muddied with bodies, and having a savvy veteran who Levis can trust is crucial for his growth. The most important thing the Titans can do at this moment is help Levis grow. I recently wrote an in-depth article last week on if the Titans have done enough to support Levis. The addition of Boyd certainly helps beat that dead horse.

Titans fans aren’t the only ones excited about the addition of Boyd, but so too are current and former players around the league:

This offseason has been one of the most fun offseasons Titans fans have had in a while. Big names like Calvin Ridley and L’Jarius Sneed have Titans fans hyped for this upcoming season. This free agency period and most recently the draft has been geared toward evaluating if Will Levis can be “THE” guy. With the most recent addition of Tyler Boyd that only further proves that it’s now all up to Levis to see how far this season can go. We’ll all know soon enough come fall. However, one thing is for certain…this is just another feather in the cap for Ran Carthon as he completes his extreme makeover Titans edition.

Bonus: Big hugs tiny kisses
