Breaking: Titans Come to Terms with Veteran Safety Quandre Diggs

Early Sunday evening Adam Schefter reported that the Titans have agreed to terms on a one year deal of up to $5m guaranteed with 31 year old Quandre Diggs. When Jamal Adams was signed he mentioned that his hope was that, “we can be teammates once again” in reference to Quandre Diggs. Since about two weeks ago all was quiet if the Titans were going to add another veteran safety to the mix. In total the Titans have added 4 big name defensive backs since the start of the new league year: Sneed, Awuzie, Adams, and now Diggs.

Early in the offseason the Titans were rumored to be closing in on a deal with veteran free agent Justin Simmons. However, that never really materialized with money being the main issue for his services. Quandre Diggs ended up being the logical choice for the Titans. Diggs statline last year for the Seahawks wasn’t spectacular — he had 1 interception and 71 tackles on the year. According to PFF’s Safety rankings for the 2023 season Diggs ranked 143rd with a 55.1 grade. However, the former 3-time Pro Bowler has the skillset to work in Wilson’s defensive scheme. This move is similar to the addition of Jamal Adams, in which, DC Dennard Wilson is banking on Diggs returning to his 2020-2023 form when he was considered one of the league’s best.

One thing the Titans have an abundance of is depth at the safety position. The Titans still have 2023 starters Amani Hooker and Elijah Molden on the roster from last year. In addition, Titans camp standout and second year player Matthew Jackson has been on fire this training camp. It will be interesting to see how the Titans plan to play these 5 players during the preseason and in training camp. The Titans are unlikely to carry 5 safeties on the 53 man roster. This could lead the Titans to possibly trade away Elijah Molden who has had issues staying healthy in the past. Molden should be at the top of the “endangered” list to not be on the team for the start of the 2024 season.

The Titans are in good position with the depth they currently have at safety. It’s a good problem to have. Defensive Coordinator Dennard Wilson undoubtedly knows what he’s doing and Titans fans should trust that there’s a plan going into the season. The expectation should be that the Titans have a solid Safety corps going into Week 1 regardless of who the two starters ultimately end up being.
