Post Game Reaction — Titans Defeat Patriots in OT

The Tennessee Titans finally managed to play all four quarters and then some to pull out an OT victory against the New England Patriots. The game started quite similarly to the previous 7 weeks. However, the Titans scored early and they managed to continue to score past the “5th Quarter.”

Coach Callahan in his post game press conference was excited that his team was able to pull out a tough win in a close game. He specifically mentioned Tony Pollard and how proud he was of him, “I’m proud as sh*t of him” Callahan said. Pollard played an outstanding game raking up 154 total yards and was chugging along run-after-run in overtime as the Titans were leaning on him to put the game away. Mason Rudolph played a decent and well managed game besides the early red zone interception that was too high for Chig Okonkwo to bring down and ended up a turnover. Both Cushenberry and Diggs were ruled out early in the game and the early reports are not good. Paul Kuharsky is already reporting that Cushenberry has torn his achilles. As for Diggs there’s still uncertainty but I would certainly count him out for the foreseeable future.

The Titans defense played well for most of the game against the Patriots. The Patriots run offense got little going on the day. In addition, the Patriots didn’t do too much through the air until it was nearly too late. Drake Maye was the Patriots top rusher on the day as he had mutliple scrambles and earned 95 hard yards on the day. The Titans were able to intercept Maye twice. One being the most pivotal in overtime. The Titans almost let the game get to them as once again special teams failed to show up when necessary. For the last drive in regulation, Drake Maye had half the field after the Titans once again let a punt return go for major yardage in the waning moments of the game. The Titans special teams has once again failed the team — outside of course from Nick Folk who’s been a superstar; Great job Nick Folk!

One of the biggest moves of the season happened just before the interception and immediately thereafter the interception. The Titans were at one point in sole possession of the #1 overall pick. The Carolina Panthers defeated the New Orleans Saints about 5 min before the end to the Titans game — which gave the Titans the #1 pick. Then, as Drake Maye loaded up and threw his final pass into the chest of Amani Hooker the Titans moved to the 9th overall pick. Going into the game the Titans easiest game to win was against New England. That should be the easiest opponent the Titans face the rest of the way to the offseason. Titans fans will need to be rooting for the: NYG/Car/LV/Cle/NO to win so they don’t get ahead of the Titans on draft day. Indeed, each of those teams has a possibility to get the #1 pick. However, some of those teams will end up playing each other. Example, the Panthers play the Giants in Germany this upcoming Sunday. Cleveland plays New Orleans in two weeks. Las Vegas plays New Orleans in their penultimate game of the season. If the Titans lose out they should have a really good shot at a top 3 pick in the draft.

What’s Next

The Titans take on the Chargers who are playing really solid football. It’s yet to see if we’ll be able to witness Will Levis lead the team, or if it’s Mason Rudolph. Quite frankly I’m not sure it matters if it’s Rudolph or Levis. The Titans woes this season go far beyond just the QB position. Hopefully the Titans can at least look more respectable than how they’ve looked the majority of the season.
