Can Tennessee and Josh Heupel get over their road woes this weekend?

Josh Heupel came to Knoxville in January 2021 and began resurrecting a then-dead program. While he has done many great things for the Volunteers, one area remains mediocre. Since Heupel took over, the Vols have a 6-7 record in true road games. The 6 wins include Kentucky(twice), Vanderbilt, LSU, Pittsburgh, and Missouri. Digging even deeper, the away record against ranked teams under Heupel is 3-5. While it's expected for your away record to be worse than your home record, at some point to be a perennial contender you have to win big games consistently on the road. Josh Heupel and the Vols have a chance this weekend to beat a ranked team on the road for the first time since LSU in 2022.

The main difference for Tennessee football in the first 3 years of road games and now is that Josh Heupel can finally pair his high-flying offense with a defense that can pick up the slack when the road environment causes the offense issues. For that reason, I am very confident that Tennessee can get the big road win this weekend, and we can finally put to bed the narrative of Tennessee not faring well on the road under Heupel once and for all.
