National Signing Day 2024: Recapping the Vols’ haul

If you’re a college football fan, the first thing you do after bowl season is to break down how your team did in the next year’s class when it comes to recruiting. Refreshing that 247Sports screen, and the google news waiting for that next commit. Well, 2024 recruiting is over. Below is a breakdown on where the Vols rank compared to other national schools.

The Tennessee Vols finished the 2024 recruiting cycle at No. 13 per 247Sports. And while the Vols are still limited on scholarships, the team brought in quality over quantity. In this class, Tennessee has two 5-star and 11 4-star players. Tennessee for the first time in over a decade has finally hit the blue chip player ratio over 50%.

One of the highest-ranking recruits in Vols’ history is Jordan Ross. The 6-4. 233lb edge rusher is the No. 1 player in his position for 2024. And, with what Rodney Gardner has done with James Pearce, it’s easy to say Jordan Ross is going to be an elite pass rusher in SEC play.

But, Jordan Ross isn’t just the highlight in this class. Coach Heupel was also able to land 5-star wide receiver Mike Matthews as well. Mike Matthews is one of the highest-rated receivers in Vols history. He is one of the quickest and most well-rounded receivers in his class. So much so, that he may star as a true freshman.

Overall, the Vols landed 21 commits, two being 5-star players and 11 being 4-star players. But, that's not all- Coach Heupel also landed 8 transfer portal players, with three being in the top 100. The transfer class was headlined by Lance Heard from LSU, a former 5-star OT. Holden Staes is a top TE out of Notre Dame and ranks as the No. 2 TE in the portal. Then, there is the explosive Chris Brazzell Jr. out of Tulane who had a monster year in 2023 and ranks as a 4-star WR.

Overall, the Vols did great this offseason and are looking to build an even better 2025 recruiting cycle following the commitment of the second-best QB in the nation George McIntrye. The Vols are in the top 3 for the No. 2 player in the nation in OT David Sanders Jr. and the No. 4 ATH in Cameron Sparks. I have a feeling I won’t be done reporting on Tennessee football recruiting any time soon.
