National media outlet shows ultimate disrespect to Tennessee Titans
Last Friday, Fox Sports published an article from Ralph Vacchiano where the writer gave his opinion on the new coaching hires in the NFL. And, to no surprise, Ralphy labeled the Titans as the biggest losers in the coaching hire process. At the same time, the article gassed Mike Vrabel up. This article, once again, shows how biased the national media is when it comes to reporting on the Vrabel situation.
Let’s begin with Mike Vrabel. According to Vacchiano, Mike Vrabel was one of the most respected coaches in the NFL. He concludes that he was fired because he wanted more power. The owner, Amy Adams Strunk, instead wanted general manager Ran Carthon to have the majority of the power.
Here’s a fact: Mike Vrabel had control. Former GM Jon Robinson and Vrabel made every recruiting and free agency decision together, and look where that got the team. That poor drafting and free agent strategy got Robinson fired and ultimately left Amy Adams Strunk wary of trusting Vrabel with even more power.
Here’s another fact: Ran Carthon gave Mike Vrabel full control his first year as GM and that resulted in the Titans’ worst year since Vrabel’s hiring.
National media like Fox Sports and Vacchiano look at minimal statistics. On paper, Vrabel is a great coach. He coached to the playoffs 3 out 7 times, won coach of the year in 2019, and made it to an AFC Championship Game. But would any of that have happened if not for a historic stretch from Derrick Henry?
People look at Brian Callahan and see a young coach who didn’t call his own plays. They look at Vrabel and see a “man’s man” who has a great relationship with his players. The real situation is much more nuanced than that.
Let's back it up a few years- The Tennessee Titans Made it to the AFC Championship during the 2019 season when Henry had a breakout season. At that point, Vrabel was only the coach for a year. Henry was a throwback power running back in the age of air raid offenses. This unique style made the Titans a matchup nightmare and carried the team to some unprecedented success. Naturally, the head coach gets all the credit for this in the eyes of national media.
But if you look at Vrabel’s coaching under a microscope, you realize he can not coach. The old-school, ground-and-pound, tough-nosed, defensive teams strategy has gone by the wayside. You either adapt or die. The end of the Vrabel Era was eerily reminiscent of the Jeff Fisher Era.
Look at the most recent Super Bowls- They are usually won by a high-octane offense with an elite QB. Gone are the days of Trent Dilfer leading an elite defense to a Super Bowl.
So, when Fox Sports and Vacchiano talk about the Titans’ hiring of Brian Callahan as a downgrade, remember that Vrabel’s stubbornness cost the team multiple games and the improvement was non-existent. Look at the Titans’ roster today, it's a dumpster fire. How many first-round and second-round misses did Vrabel and Robinson have? I can name 3 years of nothing but misses. It's why the roster is in the state it is in today.
But, with that said, Callahan is a bit of fresh air. Modernizing the offense and bringing his father who is regarded as the best offensive line coach in history. And, Callahan will develop our young gunslinger who has an arm to compete with Mahomes, Burrow, and Allen. If you ask me, the Titans should get an A for hiring Callahan, and the national media is too up its ass to know any better.
